Another
Persephone
Poem.

When she was ten,
if she stubbed one toe,
she stubbed the other,
to make it even.
Her thin girl body
radiating
from two sides.
So much pain
that for a moment—
it was indistinguishable
from calm. All the way
to fingertips,
it tingles sweetly
with the brutal caress.
And then recedes.

At thirty, her body
is carved of this intelligence.
If you love her, you should prepare
for a sense of symmetry.
Each seed of light must match
the dark. With each step you
carry her to heaven,
she'll make you bring her down.
Golden tangle at your feet,
begging, kick me,
and then shut the door.
